Dede Ayew: “Every Ghanaian will be a Swansea fan now!”

first_imgSummer signing Andre Ayew insists the Swans can count on the support of 28 million Ghanaians this season as Garry Monk’s side target another successful campaign.Ayew, who arrived on a free transfer from Marseille last month, believes the Swans will gain the backing of the entire population of Ghana for the 2015-16 campaign following his move to the Liberty. The 25-year-old, who is the son of African football legend Abedi Ayew, has starred at World Cups and in the Africa Cup of Nations for his home country. And he has no doubt that his nation will get behind Monk’s men as they aim to build on last season’s record-breaking campaign.“I have a really strong attachment to my brothers and sisters in Ghana,” said Ayew, who returned to Ghana’s capital Accra for a short holiday prior to the start of pre-season training.“When I returned to Ghana I felt the warm welcome from all my people. “They are people who really trust me, push me and want me to get to the highest level. I have been in the national team since I was 17 years old, so all of the Ghanaian people have seen me grow up as a person and as a player.“From playing at Marseille to competing in the Champions League, World Cups, African Cups and now the best league in the world with a good team like Swansea – for them to see me get to this level today makes them feel very proud.“My country watches the Premier League every weekend. There are 28 million Ghanaian people and 27 million of those will watch the Premier League.“They wanted me to go to the Premier League, and although I took this decision also for myself, I took it for a lot of people in my country because they wanted me to be here.“Swansea now has another 28 million fans behind them because I know Ghana will be supporting us. I thank all Ghanaian people who will be supporting us through the whole season. “Hopefully things will go well and we will have a great season.” –Follow Joy Sports on Twitter: @Joy997FM. Fighter of the Decade, 2010-2019: Who will deserve the honor?

first_imgLooking at past eras, my choices for Fighter of the Decade are:1880-89: John L. Sullivan1890-99: Bob Fitzsimmons, with honorable mention to James J. Corbett1900-09: Joe Gans, with honorable mention to James Jeffries and Stanley Ketchel1910-19: Jack Johnson1920-29: Jack Dempsey and Gene Tunney, with honorable mention to Benny Leonard1930-39: Joe Louis, with honorable mention to Henry Armstrong1940-49: Sugar Ray Robinson1950-59: Rocky Marciano, with honorable mention to Archie Moore1960-69: Muhammad Ali1970-79: Roberto Duran, with honorable mention to Carlos Monzon1980-89: Sugar Ray Leonard, with honorable mention to Larry Holmes, Mike Tyson, Marvin Hagler and Julio Cesar Chavez1990-99: Roy Jones Jr., with honorable mention to Evander Holyfield, Lennox Lewis and Pernell Whitaker2000-09: Manny Pacquiao, with honorable mention to Floyd Mayweather and Bernard HopkinsJoin DAZN and watch more than 100 fight nights a yearThese men were dominant in their time. Many brought never-before-seen skills to their craft, captured the public imagination, and engaged in legendary fights. They were champions — often in multiple weight classes and in eras when the term “champion” was synonymous with greatness. A few changed the social fabric of America. Their ring exploits were the stuff of legend.Significantly, only one of the men designated above as “Fighter of the Decade” — Rocky Marciano — was undefeated over the course of his career. All but three — Sullivan, Marciano and Ali — lost fights during the decade in which they reigned supreme. When a fighter fights the best again and again, sometimes he loses. When Sugar Ray Robinson was young and great, he lost to Jake LaMotta. At the end of 2019, writers and fans will decide who deserves to be called boxing’s latest “Fighter of the Decade.” In prior eras, there were more than enough worthy candidates for the honor because fighters went in tough and fought other great fighters in their prime. But that doesn’t happen much anymore. Most elite fighters today lack the inquisitors to be considered great. Instead, they’re “all-time goods.” The days when Ray Leonard, Thomas Hearns, Roberto Duran and Marvin Hagler engaged in their extraordinary round-robin warfare are long gone. Too often now, hype and glitz take priority over the best fighting the best.Still, in a matter of months, someone will be named “Fighter of the Decade.” Who deserves the honor?Manny Pacquiao entered the decade as the hottest property in boxing with devastating knockouts of Oscar De La Hoya, Ricky Hatton and Miguel Cotto in his previous three fights. But Pacquiao’s record in the current decade (11-4, 1 KO) falls short of the mark. Two of the four blemishes on his record during the past 10 years came on questionable decisions. But Pacquiao was outclassed by Floyd Mayweather Jr. and starched by Juan Manuel Marquez. And none of his victories since Jan. 1, 2010, were notable. He doesn’t make the final ballot.Other fighters are victims of the calendar. Terence Crawford, Vasyl Lomachenko, Anthony Joshua and Deontay Wilder have begun to construct impressive bodies of work. But none of them has accomplished nearly enough to warrant consideration for decade-end honors.MORE: Street fights — stories of violence outside the ringThe conversation is likely to focus on five fighters:Andre Ward (11-0, 3 KOs): Ward entered the decade as a participant in Showtime’s “Super Six” tournament and scored victories over Arthur Abraham, Carl Froch, Chad Dawson and Sergey Kovalev (twice). He’s a craftsman who stayed in his lane and got the job done.Floyd Mayweather Jr. (10-0, 2 KOs): Mayweather is a worthy candidate but, as in the previous decade, he avoided top fighters in their prime. Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto and Manny Pacquiao were past their peak when Floyd fought them, and Canelo Alvarez had yet to mature. Victor Ortiz, Robert Guerrero, Marcos Maidana (twice), Andre Berto and Conor McGregor round out Floyd’s resume for the decade.Wladimir Klitschko (11-2, 7 KOs): Klitschko entered the decade with the IBF and WBO belts around his waist and added the WBA bauble. But his victories came against a “who’s who” of mediocrity, and he ended the decade with losses to Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua. Klitschko was an imposing presence on the boxing scene, and he wore his crown with grace. But to be “Fighter of the Decade,” a boxer needs to have beaten worthy inquisitors. Klitschko didn’t.Canelo Alvarez (22-1-1, 13 KOs): Canelo scored victories over an aging Miguel Cotto and an old Shane Mosley. But he has been willing to go in tough. His competitive spirit led him to challenge Floyd Mayweather too soon. He fought and beat Austin Trout and Erislandy Lara when most name fighters were avoiding them. And he battled Gennady Golovkin twice, adding a win and a draw to his resume. Alvarez is slated to fight Daniel Jacobs on May 4 with another bout (possibly against Golovkin) scheduled for Mexican Independence Day weekend in September. If Canelo wins these two fights impressively, he might claim “Fighter of the Decade” honors.MORE: Watch Canelo Alvarez vs. Daniel Jacobs on DAZN Ever since John L. Sullivan became America’s first sports superstar in the 1880s, each 10-year period has seen one or more fighters who were worthy of being designated “Fighter of the Decade.”History judges elite fighters in large measure by their record against other elite fighters and how they performed in their most difficult challenges. History also awards points for longevity because, as A. J. Liebling wrote, “Only the great ones win the title young and hold onto it.” And consideration is given to whether a fighter’s reign was special in a way that went beyond boxing. Gennady Golovkin (20-1-1, 19 KOs): Golovkin has to answer the same question put to other “Fighter of the Decade” candidates — “Who did you beat?” He amassed a string of impressive victories against workmanlike competition. But when the time came for Golovkin to step up the level of opposition, he was less than great. Golovkin’s supporters say that he was ”robbed” against Canelo. But Daniel Jacobs partisans say that Jacobs was robbed against GGG. A quality win this spring followed by a victory in September over the winner of Jacobs-Alvarez would make Gennady’s candidacy more viable. And the “Fighter of the Decade” will be … ???Thomas Hauser’s new email address is [email protected] His most recent book – Protect Yourself at All Times – was published by the University of Arkansas Press. Beacon Hill Country Club Earns Eco-Friendly Badge

first_imgBy Chris Rotolo |ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS – The game of golf is played among natural beauty, and Beacon Hill Country Club is doing its part to preserve and enhance its course and property. The ACSP provides an educational service to help existing golf courses develop effective conservation and wildlife enhancement programs, an effort that Mueller credits golf course superintendent Tim Meyer for spearheading. Earlier this month Beacon Hill Country Club received recognition in environmental planning from the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program (ACSP) for Golf Courses, a worldwide initiative administered by Audubon International which is designed to help golf courses and open green spaces maintain their property to higher and healthier standards.“This is certainly a designation that we’re ver y proud of,” said Alexander Mueller, Beacon Hill Country Club general manager. “It’s always been a goal of ours to maintain a course that is environmentally friendly and harmonious with nature, but with this program we saw an opportunity to increase our standards even further.” One club member, Robert Breeden, has been an advocate for ACSP enrollment and said he’s witnessed a concerted effort by his fellow members to live up to the standards set by the program.“I can speak for our membership when I say that we’re proud and thrilled to be ACSP certified,” Breeden said. “This is a significant accomplishment, a three-year process, in which we have to demonstrate environmental leadership in the golf industry. To do that takes an effort from all of our members. And now we have to continue to educate our fellow golfers and club members about the benefits of maintaining this effort.”A bird watcher as well as an avid golfer, Breeden spoke of the importance of not only maintaining the club’s efforts for a healthier environment but sustaining it for generations to come.“Cemeteries and golf courses are really the only green spaces left in suburbia, so we have a big responsibility to take care of ours and ensure that it’s taken care of when we’re no longer here,” Breeden said. “Part of the experience of playing golf is enjoying the natural surroundings. And being part of the ACSP is only going to benefit our grounds, our golfers and the game itself.”This article first appeared in the June 21 – 28, 2018 print edition of The Two River Times. Beacon is the 19th golf course in New Jersey to be included in ACSP and is the first course in Monmouth County to earn the designation.“There is a movement amongst courses taking place around the world, especially in areas of this country near the Everglades and in other coastal regions where people are really making an effort to take care of these sensitive environments,” Mueller said. “We’re excited to be piggybacking off those efforts and joining the movement.” After the environmental plan is designed, approved and implemented, properties in the program may apply for recognition in wildlife and habitat management, chemical use reduction and safety, water conservation, water quality management, and outreach and education by demonstrating they have met minimum requirements for each category.Once the course has been recognized in all categories, they are designated a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. By joining and participating in the ACSP, Beacon Hill Country Club will be involved in projects that enhance habitat for wildlife and preserve natural resources for the benefit of the local community. These projects may include placing nesting boxes for cavity-nesting birds such as bluebirds and swallows, utilizing integrated pest management techniques, conserving water and maintaining food and cover for wildlife. With an 88-acre course that includes pockets of wetlands, several freshwater streams and irrigation ponds and various local wildlife, Mueller believes these projects will only be successful if the club’s membership adopts a similar mindset.last_img read more

He had like an electrolyte imbalance, so it was disappointing to go there and not run better than that.“But he’s been training forwardly since he came home and we’re looking forward to getting a good race in him. TrainerSts1st2nd3rdWin%Money Won YOUNG ALL ‘AMERICAN’ IN TRIPLE CROWN PURSUITGary Young has been on American Pharoah’s bandwagon from the get-go, andwith a Triple Crown in close proximity, the private clocker isn’t about to bail out now.He knows it won’t be easy, however. There have been 13 horses that attempted to capture racing’s most elusive prize since Affirmed was the last to do it in 1978. All have failed. There are reasons, be they legitimate or theoretical.“This is going to be Pharoah’s fourth race in eight weeks and it’s going to be a mile and a half,” said Young, a keen and respected observer of the Thoroughbred for 35 years.“If they’re ever going to beat him, it’s going to be this race. I think he’s the best horse in this crop by more than a little bit, and I think he’s the best horse I’ve seen in a while. Obviously, I’ve been on record as saying that.“He’s still got to prove that, but as far as horses going through the Triple Crown, I think he’s the best I’ve seen in some time.“Looking at the race, he’s going to be in front. The big question is which one of the main contenders is going to be the first one to go after him? Do you want to be the first one to take him on? You’d rather be the second or third after someone else has softened him up.“I respect Materiality, I respect Keen Ice. If you watch Keen Ice’s race in the (Kentucky) Derby, when everyone else was shoving for all they were worth at the three-eighths pole, he was passing horses under a pull and he had to steady for more than an eighth of a mile (eventually finishing seventh, beaten nine lengths by American Pharoah, who won by a length). I respect those horses, but I think Pharoah’s the best horse.”That said, should Pharoah do it, would it give racing a welcome bump?“Would it help? Yeah,” Young opined. “But there is still going to be trouble filling entries and there’s still going to be in-fighting among different factions in racing.“There have been 13 horses that have attempted to win the Triple Crown since Affirmed in 1978, and there were people in the business who questioned whether they were worthy of winning it.“As far as talent, I don’t think anyone really questions whether American Pharoah is worthy of being a Triple Crown winner.“Is he going to do it? I happen to think he will. I acknowledge that (winning) four races in eight weeks is not an easy thing, and a mile and a half has become an antiquated distance on the main track, but if he breaks and makes the lead and relaxes like I think he will, when they go after him and try to tackle him at the half-mile pole, they better be tied on.” -30- JockeyMts1st2nd3rdWin%Money Won William Spawr1632219%$89,840 Flavien Prat681515322%$895,700 Mike Smith2556220%$495,690 SANTA ANITA STATISTICS Victor Espinoza1842322%$188,350 Mark Glatt3145513%$204,494 Tiago Pereira3167419%$270,670 Peter Eurton2432513%$213,296 John Sadler3857513%$217,278 Mike Puype3547611%$333,530 Dan Hendricks1032030%$110,140 Ricky Agarie1231325%$110,720 Vann Belvoir2735411%$124,390 Doug O’Neill571012618%$468,748last_img read more

5 Great Sites for Motion Graphics Inspiration

first_imgNeed inspiration for your next motion-graphics piece or not sure how the opening titles for your short film should look? Check out these sites for some great inspiration!I do a fair amount of motion design work in After Effects, and I keep several websites in my feed reader for when I need to rustle up some inspiration. Here are 5 of my favorites – bookmark these!1. Art of the TitleProbably one a lot of you know, but Art of the Title is a fantastic site to get inspiration from. If you haven’t seen it, Art of the Title showcases title sequences from movies and includes interviews and analysis of the sequences. It’s a fantastic learning resource, as well as an inspiration resource!2. Brand NewOne of my favorite sites in my feed reader, Brand New is actually a design and advertising blog focusing around logo and corporate identity rebranding. Each post covers a logo/brand redesign, gives background and some commentary on the redesign, and showcases the implementation, both print and (if applicable) motion. It’s a fantastic site to see what the big ad and design agencies are doing, and to see how a brand can be successfully translated to motion design.3. Trapcode SharelogTrapcode products are a fantastic (and common) tool for motion designer. Trapcode’s Sharelog shows off great experimental techniques, video tutorials, and animations created using these products. If you use Trapcode Particular or Form, definitely check this site out for new ideas.4. Abduzeedo’s “Design Inspiration” PostsInspiration isn’t always gathered from video or film. Sometimes graphic design or photography can be a great source of inspiration. Abduzeedo (a great design blog) does a regular post filled to the brim with design inspiration images – and they have over 1,600 of them so far!5. Motion Graphics ServedThis is a newer one for me. Motion Graphics Served curates “work from leading creatives on Behance” with a specific target on motion graphics. It’s a great resource to see what projects other animators are doing, both for fun and work.Personal Motion Graphics PortfoliosAs a bonus, here are a few personal portfolio and blog sites from leading motion designers. These useful sites can provide great inspiration as well!6. Michael JonesMichael is a great animator, and has a fantastic portfolio of work on his site. He also has a great blog with a nice backlog of After Effects and Cinema 4D tutorials and articles.7. Paul ConigliaroPaul is a great motion designer with a fantastic portfolio, and also happens to be the organizer of #mochat (on Twitter). If you’re on Twitter and haven’t checked out a #mochat session you’re missing out!8. Dan DiFeliceDan is primarily a VFX artist (who just so happens to work at The Mill), but he’s done some pretty killer motion graphics work as well. Check out his Vimeo page for more videos.last_img read more
