The Waterfront and Allied Workers Union (WAUW) is describing the year 2011 as both challenging and successful.Secretary General of WAWU Kertist Augustus said the union is still grappling with the long outstanding issue facing employees at the port that have been unresolved for the past nine years.Port workers are negotiating for better working conditions and better wages.He said there are also more than 20 outstanding issues with the Ministry of Labour which has not yet been resolved.“We wrote to the labour division twice this year because we are seeing very little action being taken to speed up these matters,” he said.He said WAWU was also “riddled” with letters from the Roseau City Council indicating the inability of the council to meet its fortnightly payments to the workers.“In addition to that we had other outstanding issues like uniforms that were not paid from since 2008 and the whole question of the provisions of the collective labour agreement that allows for two medical checks every year. In fact we are in negotiations with the council in that regard,” he said.Another matter that dominated the news in 2011 was the closure of the ticketing offices of LIAT.“The problems that we had with management of LIAT were overwhelming. We were finally able to sign a protocol agreement. WAWU currently has no less than seven matters before the tribunal for consideration and we are concerned that the tribunal panel isn’t meeting as regularly as it should,” he added.Meantime Mr. Augusts said that he can report some successes in 2011.Chief among these successes are 16 negotiating sessions with management teams and tribunal agreements.“We also conducted 16 negotiating sessions with various management teams on the island and we were able at the end to sign nine collective labour agreements. We were also successful with two tribunal issues. Again in 2011 we also expanded our membership base in that we unionize two new branches,” he said.Dominica Vibes Newslast_img
