IDB releases findings of a study on violent crime in Trinidad…

first_imgWASHINGTON, CMC – The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) says a recent new study showing that treating violence as an epidemic and intervening to prevent  its transmission can be an effective tool to reduce violent crime in Trinidad and Tobago. The study was done in collaboration with the Arizona State University.Evaluating Cure Violence The study, titled “Evaluating Cure Violence,” was presented at the IDB’s headquarters on Thursday. It evaluated the results of the Cure Violence program in Trinidad and Tobago, a project financed by the Washington-based financial institution. The IDB said that violence in Latin America and the Caribbean has been an ongoing humanitarian crisis for decades, fueling an immigration and refugee crisis across the region.Three-year evaluationIt said the Evaluating Cure Violence study is the result of an extensive, three-year evaluation of Project REASON, a local violence prevention program that used the Cure Violence methodology to address homicides, woundings and shootings.According to the study, the Cure Violence program uses a public health model to prevent the “transmission” of violent crime. The model works by interrupting transmission of the disease; reducing the risk of those at highest risk to commit violent crime; and changing community norms. The findings presented in this report are based on the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data collected before, during, and after the program’s 26-month implementation period.Significant decline in crime rateThe study noted that within one year of the launch of Project REASON, the violent crime rate in the treatment area of Trinidad and Tobago was 45.1 per cent lower than in the comparison area that was not part of the program.According to the study, the key findings of Evaluating Cure Violence in Trinidad and Tobago include calls to the police for murders, shootings, and woundings decreased in the treatment area by 22.6 per cent while increasing by 10.4 per cent in the comparison area over the same period. The study also found that the Port of Spain General Hospital, the closest hospital to the intervention area, experienced a mean reduction of roughly 38.7 per cent in the number of gunshot wound admissions.“The findings presented in Evaluating Cure Violence in Trinidad and Tobago provide strong evidence that expanding the Cure Violence methodology will be an effective way to reduce homicides, woundings and shootings as well as to contribute towards improving lives in Trinidad and Tobago,” the IDB added.last_img read more

McAuley Returns To NI Squad Ahead Of World  Cup Qualifiers

first_imgVeteran defender Gareth McAuley has been recalled into the Northern Ireland (NI) squad ahead of their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Germany and Norway slated for October. The 37-year old had earlier missed last month’s victories over San Marino and Czech Republic as a result of a thigh injury.Another NI defender in Craig Cathcart didn’t make the 26-man squad because of a knee injury but there are call-ups for uncapped pair Jordan Jones and George Saville.Martin O’Neill’s team currently occupy the second spot in Group C behind Germany and only a win would suffice if they want to emerge as group winners having already sealed a top-two spot.NI host Group C leaders Germany on October 5 and failure to beat the world champions mean they will have to settle for a playoff berth. They face Norway in Oslo three days later for their last game in Group C.McAuley, who has scored 9 goals in 72 appearances, was forced off with a recurrence of a thigh injury during June’s qualifier victory over Azerbaijan and is now expected to start in place of Cathcart against the Germans in Belfast.Speaking about his squad, O’Neill said: “Gareth would always be a big miss. His game time has been limited but McAuley is always one who you want in your squad.”“Germany couldn’t be more difficult – we couldn’t have the game though at a better time and we have nothing to lose.“After the players experienced the Euros, we want to experience a World Cup. But we have lots of work to do yet.“Jordan Jones is quick, he’s the sort of player fans will love. It’s a great opportunity for him and he is only 22.” he added.Northern Ireland squad:Goalkeepers: McGovern (Norwich City), Mannus (St Johnstone), Carroll (Linfield)Defenders: Hughes (Hearts), G McAuley (West Brom), Evans (West Brom), Brunt (West Brom), C McLaughlin (Millwall), Hodson (Rangers), A Thompson (Bradford City loan), D Lafferty (Sheffield United), Flanagan (Burton Albion)Midfielders: Davis (Southampton), McGinn (Gwangju), Norwood (Fulham loan), C Evans (Blackburn), Ferguson (Millwall), Dallas (Leeds), Lund (Burton Albion), Paton (St Johnstone), J Jones (Kilmarnock), G Saville (Millwall)Strikers: K Lafferty (Hearts), Magennis (Charlton), Washington (QPR), McCartan (Bradford City)RelatedNI Blow: Veteran Defender Out Of Germany ClashOctober 4, 2017In “FIFA”Coleman Names 23-Man Squad For Upcoming World Cup QualifiersSeptember 28, 2017In “World Cup”2018 World Cup Qualifying Wrap (Europe): England, Germany Secure Final SpotsOctober 6, 2017In “Europe”last_img read more

Nasarawa Dig Deep to Win NWPL Super4 2016/17

first_imgThe final of the 2016/17 Nigeria Women Premier League (NWPL) Super4 came to an exciting end as Nasarawa Amazons who last won the trophy in 2014 defeated Delta Queens by a lone goal to lift the trophy for the second time. The team from Lafia who were considered outsiders in a competition dominated by teams from the South-South region of the country can pat themselves on the back for a good display. The final kicked off to an exciting start with both teams showing attacking flair and looking to go ahead early on in the game. But no goal was recorded all thanks to outstanding saves from the goalkeepers of both teams. The tie was keenly contested and if the first half had ended as a barren draw, football fans at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium would have enjoyed the most exciting barren first half of the competition so far.The Lafia ladies though had other plans and got the decisive goal of the game in the 41st minute through Amarachi Okoronkwo. The defence of Delta Queens was caught napping as the cross in and goalkeeper Akarekor was culpable as she was beaten at her near post from Okoronkwo’s glancing header. The goal was a typical definition of Nasarawa Amazons team display throughout the competition. The half ended on a high for the Lafia ladies as they bosses possession and saw out the half to take their lead into the dressing room.In the second half the Lafia ladies had chances to put the game to rest but were uncharacteristically wasteful in front of goal. The Kwale ladies who had so far been found wanting began to get back their groove and started creating chances in the hope of getting the equaliser but couldn’t find a way through the resolute defending of Nasarawa Amazons. On the few occasions they did, goalkeeper Chioma Nwankwo refused to be beaten and got injured in the 64th minute while making a save and after receiving a lengthy treatment to a sprained wrist had to be replaced by Uchenna Chukwu. At this point the Nasawara bench felt it best to hold on and preserve their lead and made changes in this regard. For Delta Queens it was a case of giving all they had left in order to get back into the game and made attacking changes to help their course but the Lafia ladies held on and repelled all the attacks thrown at them to make sure they won the title for the first time since 2014.Relatedlast_img read more
